What’s Under Foot? Environmental Concerns for Flooring

What’s Under Foot? Wood and Environmental Concerns in Flooring

whats-under-feet

Wood & Environmental Concerns Under-Foot

Chipboard, fiberboard, hardboard, particleboard, plywood and veneers used for furniture, shelving, floors, and walls uses formaldehyde and other resin binders.  These are all cause for environmental concerns.
  • The vapors from these glues out gas and are considered toxic.
  • The most toxic material in kitchens now is a PVC floor vinyl.

Healthier Choices

Linoleum has the durability of PVC and none of the toxicity. Made of cork, linseed oil, wood resin, and chalk, it is pressed into a fabric backing, which must be glued.  So it is important to check that the adhesives are non-toxic.
Some other good choices for ‘soft’ flooring are Cork and Latex.  Cork made from the outer bark of the cork oak , which offers good noise and thermal insulation.

    • Cork is a sustainable material – it regenerates itself after stripping.
    • Check that’s not vinyl backed or treated.
    • Latex from the rubber tree was a popular waterproof flooring before plastics came along. It is a renewable resource but is still limited in supply.

Carpets

I can’t discuss flooring without mentioning carpets.  Studies have shown that there are over 200 chemicals in the gases which are released by new carpets.

  • New carpets contain toluene, benzene, formaldehyde, ethyl benzene, styrene, acetone and a host of other chemicals which cause hallucinations, nerve damage and respiratory illness in humans.
  • Old carpets carry a heavy burden of dust mites, dirt, pesticides and other toxins brought in on shoes, feet and pets. Carpets can hold 8X their weight in toxin-filled trapped dirt.
  • Other compounds that affect your health are adhesives, flame retardants and stain protectors.

Natural, wood, silk, hemp, jute, cotton carpet that have not been treated and have nontoxic or natural dyes are available. However certified natural dyes and fibers are few a far between and can have a high price tag.

Whatever your needs and priorities are, is is important to be equipped with the facts so that we can make the best possible choices for ourselves and the planet.

Enjoy a Healthy and Happy Beginning of Summer! Judith

What Are You Drinking? Is your Drinking Water Safe?

Is Your Drinking Water Safe?

Our drinking water contains invisible elements.

Feng Shui and the Environment

Last month I taught 2 day long seminars on Feng Shui for architects and interior designers in Dallas & Houston, for Design Arts Seminars. Teaching was great fun (I even hauled out my cowboy boots for the occasion) and I was thrilled the material was so well received . One of the requirements of the course (to receive the Continuing Education Credits these professionals require for maintaining their license), was to include a portion of the day on sustainability. Creating healthy environments is the aim of Feng Shui. The words themselves (meaning Wind & Water) define what’s needed for the very existence of life on our planet. Nothing can survive without clean air and water.

what-are-you-drinking

I discussed the properties of each of the 5 Elements (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal) and how to use them effectively for Feng Shui adjustments, with any design scheme. Then on a less sexy note, we turned our attention to the toxins present our environment and the healthy, sustainable choices we can make. This is the first of 5 newsletters I will dedicate to our personal & planetary health.

We start with WATER Simple Water Conservation We Can All Practice:

  • Turn off the water while brushing our teeth to save 25 gallons of water a month per person.
  • If building or renovating install low flush toilets.
  • Recycle gray water – dish, shower, sink & laundry water comprise 50-80% of residential ‘waste’ water.
  • While grey water may look “dirty,” it is a safe, beneficial source of irrigation in a yard. However, remember that it is essential to use “plant friendly” products, those without salts, boron, or chlorine bleach.

7 Toxins in Most of Our Drinking Water: An adult human body is 55-60% water – the brain is 70% & the lungs are 90% water.

  • Fluoride – Research has shown that fluoride actually damages tooth enamel, suppresses immune and thyroid function & increases cancer.
  • Chlorine – Chlorine has been identified as a leading cause of bladder cancer.  It has been associated with rectal and breast cancers, asthma, birth defects and premature aging of skin
  • Radioactive Contaminants – Since Fukushima, radioactive fallout from Japan has been detected in drinking water supplies throughout the US.
  • Pharmaceutical Drugs – Anything from antibiotics and birth control pills to painkillers, antidepressants and other psychiatric medications are in our drinking water.
  • Hexavalent Chromium – Made famous by the movie, Erin Brockovich, this chemical poisoned thousands of people.  There are still no regulations for it in drinking water.
  • Lead, Aluminum & Heavy Metals – Corrosion of pipes in our plumbing systems leads to lead consumption. This is linked to severe developmental delays and learning disorders in children.
  • Aluminum and other heavy metals are linked to nerve, brain and kidney damage.
  • Arsenic is a poisonous element known to be extremely carcinogenic. Some 56 million Americans drink water that contain unsafe levels of arsenic.

What Can We Do? For the best filtering, there must be a filter at the point of entry but even one attached to your sink will make a difference. Do your own research!

  • Carbon/Activated Carbon: Activated carbon chemically bonds with and removes some contaminants in water filtered through it. Carbon filters vary greatly in effectiveness: some just remove chlorine and improve taste and odor. Others remove a wide range of contaminants including asbestos, lead, mercury and Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs.
  • Reverse Osmosis: This process relies on a semipermeable membrane that retains particles larger than water molecules. Reverse osmosis can remove many contaminants not removed by carbon, including arsenic, fluoride, hexavalent chromium.

I hope this Spring inspires each of us to live in more sustainable and healthy ways (that is sexy!).
Next month I’ll write about Wood & specifically the surfaces we walk on.
À votre santé – to Your Health!

Love and Feng Shui in the Year of the Monkey. Each zodiac animal has its own qualities that are consistent year to year.  However, every sign will be influenced by the Monkey’s energy this year. Below are some insights for each zodiac animal in 2016. Please note that fortunes can be reduced or enhanced with Feng Shui, rituals, meditations and transcendental adjustments.  All people have their own karma to consider. A personal, in depth reading will reveal more specifics for each month. Remember that even the luckiest signs (the Rat and Dragon this year), have their cautions.  The unluckiest (the Tiger and Pig) have their bright spots.

The 5 Elements (which you can read about at http://sacredcurrents.com/about-feng-shui/about-elements/) are Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. This year’s Monkey is in the Fire element, which opposes the Monkey’s natural element – Metal. Thus, it may be a trying year and one with potential volatility, especially for the financial markets as the Metal Monkey is associated with gold or money. On the other hand if you tend the Fire carefully, it can shed light on the opportunities you are looking for.

As the Monkey is known for being clever, intelligent and resourceful, it should be a year of new innovation and invention. The Monkey is a problem solver but he can also create them. This is a time of risk taking and there is the potential of sudden changes of all kinds (don’t try to keep a Monkey down). It is important to keep your sense of humor in the year of the unpredictable Monkey.

Year of the Fire Monkey 4713

As the Monkey is known for being clever, intelligent and resourceful, this Year of the Fire Monkey should be a year of new innovation and invention. The Monkey is a problem solver but he can also create them. This is a time of risk taking and there is the potential of sudden changes of all kinds (don’t try to keep a Monkey down). It is important to keep your sense of humor in the year of the unpredictable Monkey.
It is always fun to name a few famous Monkeys. These include Julius Caesar, Daniel Craig, Bette Davis, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eleanor Roosevelt, Diana Ross, Will Smith, Elizabeth Taylor, Leonardo daVinci, and George Lucas.
Prior to the Lunar New Year, it is a good idea for all of us to ‘clear house’ both physically and metaphorically. In other words clean up outstanding debts, issues and generally complete things before the lunar New Year. All signs will do well to perform the ‘Golden Cicada Sheds Its Shell’ ritual, along with ‘Welcoming in the Wealth God’ and ‘Changing the Chi of the Environment.’
Each zodiac animal has its own qualities that are consistent year to year, yet every sign will be influenced by the Monkey’s energy this year.

The Power of RED

newsletter 2015-12-09 The power of red

This time of year we see a lot of the color RED

…ribbons, point setters, decorations of all kinds.  The power of red is pervasive. Religion aside, red and green are the colors associated with the holiday season. OK it is true, for 8 days we do see a bit of blue and white for Hanukkah. Happy Hanukkah to those of us celebrating!

View PDF: http://sacredcurrents.com/pdf/2015-12-09-The-Power-of-RED.pdf

In the practice of feng shui and five element theory, green and red represent the elements wood and fire respectively. In the darkest days of winter, nature is not abundant in color. Seeing these holiday colors reminds us of life and warmth. Specifically the wood element relates to growth, new beginnings and family. The fire element represents light, recognition of one another and spiritual enlightenment. Which all sounds like the spirit of the holidays to me – be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza or your own brand of celebration.

Yet year round, the color red represents auspiciousness and protection in feng shui. The traditional use of red envelops for compensation or gifts is a classic example. The power of Red comes in the form of a red string used in countless feng shui adjustments. Whether to ‘cure’ fighting doors (doors that hit one another), enhance health, insure safe travels, or to help sell your home, the use of a red string in combination with other things will magnify your intentions.

Similarly, wearing a thin red string as a talisman is a Jewish folk custom to  ward off misfortune brought about by the “evil eye”. It is popularly thought to be associated with Kabbalah, a mystical tradition.

In Hinduism, priests wear red string on their wrists while performing sacred ritual. They  also tie these strings on all who attends the ceremony – right wrist for men and unmarried women, left wrist for married women. It is to remind them that they are partaking in a sacred act.  The power of red is widely recognized.

To support an auspicious and safe new year, consider a Feng Shui Consultation Gift Certificate in any amount (starting at $150) as a gift to yourself or someone important on your list.  It will be sent in a beautiful red (of course!) envelop, tied with red string. Or if you prefer It will sent electronically, surrounded by auspicious red envelops.

I consult around the world by phone, Skype, and email and regularly travel to all 5 Boroughs of NYC, Westchester, Upstate NY, LI, NJ, PA, CT and beyond.

Chinese New Year is February 8th, 2016. It is not too early to update your feng shui  adjustments and find out what the Year of the Fire Monkey has in store for you.

Contact me and we can discuss it.

May these last days of 2015 be Auspicious + Safe.

Superstitions and Traditions that Surround Home Buying and Selling

REAL ESTATE WEEKLY by Holly Dutton October 30, 2015

View PDF: http://sacredcurrents.com/pdf/Feng-Shui-Meets-Halloween.pdf

In a real estate market like New York City’s, buyers and sellers need all the luck, positive energy, and blessings they can get. Enter Judith Wendell – a Feng Shui expert and owner of Sacred Currents, a company that specializes in feng shui, space clearings, and creating vital and thriving environments.

Wendell started out with mostly small business owners and apartment dwellers, but she soon became popular among developers and commercial buildings. In 2012, when the Baccarat Hotel & Residences was just beginning to be built on West 53rd Street, the developers, Starwood Capital, had her bless the site, which had formerly been a beloved public library and then became a subject of controversy, developers wanted to bring good chi and energy to the space.

“In many cultures, there is always a ritual for honoring the land that is being disrupted, or what has gone on there in the past,” Wendell told Broker’s Weekly. “It’s recognizing that we’re not just bulldozing – there’s a connection to the Earth.”

Recently, a developer in Long Island City sought Wendell’s services for a site his company was working on, fearing that there might have been an old cemetery in the area, possibly an original Dutch burial ground. Wendell performed a “clearing” ceremony on the site, which involves “dousing,” a way of seeking out energy.

“When there is an energy, I focus on that particular area, be it a home or a site, and try to drill down a bit what the disturbance is about, and even if I don’t know that, I’ll do more clearing there,” she said.

In addition to Starwood, Wendell has worked with the Howard Hughes Corporation on sites in Hawaii and in the South Seaport. Feng Shui is the 5,000-year-old practice of balancing energy flow in a particular space – and for apartments and homes, that means placing objects in an arrangement that best promotes good energy flow through the space.

Sacred Currents Newsletter September 9, 2015: What are You REFLECTING?

What Are You Reflecting? At the beginning of the summer, I listed 9 reasons to use a mirror. If you missed that newsletter, check it out here. Even though mirrors are consider the ‘aspirin’ of Feng Shui, I thought I would bookend the season by offering 9 reasons NOT to use a mirror. In other words, a good thing is only good when it is.

View PDF: http://sacredcurrents.com/pdf/What-Are-You-REFLECTING.pdf

Mirror ‘No-Nos’:

  1. If you are a poor sleeper, don’t have a mirror in your bedroom as it activates your chi.
  2. Always make sure a mirror is reflecting something you want in your home (not the construction site, cemetery, or nasty neighbor across the street).
  3. Never use an antiqued, distressed, broken or smoky mirror, as it obscures your chi, and diminishes your vitality.
  4. When placing a mirror, make sure it is not cutting off the tallest or shortest person in the household at either the head or neck. It is never good to loose your head for any reason.
  5. If you want a calm, meditative place to slow down, do not have a mirror as it activities the environment and your chi.
  6. Make sure you don’t reflect ‘sha’ chi  or what is referred to as knife edge chi. This may be coming from anything angled or sharp (from the inside or out), such as the corner of a building or the reflection of oncoming traffic. This reflection could be potentially harmful by creating accident chi or diminishing your well-being in some way.
  7. Do not have a mirror across from a bathroom as this will bring the chi of the bathroom further out into the room.
  8. Do not use mirrored tiles. This includes little sunbursts with mirrors, or heavily beveled mirrors, as they too weaken you by ‘cutting up’ your chi into little pieces.
  9. Make sure a mirror is not reflecting clutter, garbage or a messy desk, as it will multiple these things in your life!

May you reflect what is clear and true, as we transition through September into Fall. Judith

fyi, transitional times like back to school/work, change of season, holidays (blessings for a Healthy and Happy New Year for those that celebrate Rosh Hashanah), new beginnings and closures, are all propitious times for updating your environment with a Feng Shui consultation and/or a Clearing/Blessing Ritual. Please give me a call at one of the #s below and I will offer you the best options to enhance this time for you
