March 21st is the first day of spring on the solar Gregorian calendar
It officially started Feb 5th on the lunar Chinese calendar. This is the spring equinox. The passage from winter to spring, darkness to light, cold to warm and yin to yang is transformational. Bare tress bud while the hard ground gives way to new stalks pushing through the surface. The days lengthen and I must not be the only one who let’s her shoulders down from around her ears!
Earth
Although the Earth element (review the 5 Elements here) is not associated with one of the four season, it holds 3 positions on the Feng Shui bagua or template – the center or Tai Chi and the mid-seasons between winter & spring and summer & autumn. These 3 positions all represent times of transition. The sector known as ‘Ken’ or yang Earth is part winter, part spring. Its known as a time for cultivating our ‘inner-self’ or skillfulness in life. Ken is often represented by a mountain or cave, recognizing the need to go within and gain knowledge before fully re-emerging in spring.
Home & Work
The area of your home or office that responds to the area of knowledge is the NE corner in Compass Feng Shui and the left near corner of your home, office or bedroom in BTB methodology. This area is supported by the earth colors of brown, beige, terra-cotta, yellow, orange and pink; along with stone, porcelain, pottery, mountain photography or inspirational symbols.
This is also a time for us to ‘clean up our act’. As we move towards spring with its explosions of new growth, its a reminder that we all share this planet and bear responsibility for its health. I have mentioned the Carbon Fund in previous newsletters. It is a convenient way to offset my carbon footprint from the travel I do for work and fun.

Whether you are studying professionally for 10 CEUs or for yourself, no prior experience or knowledge is required. This hands-on 5 week, experiential course will offer you tools to improve your own environment immediately. I welcome your questions.

FYI, you’re invited to listen to a 10 minute talk I recorded recently on: Understanding the Command Position – one of the most important principles of Feng Shui.
The Command Position is the ‘power position’ and applies to siting a skyscraper, a home and to interior design. It effects health, finances and relationships.
Micene Fontaine the director of Design Arts Seminars takes a few minutes to offer insight to the Certificate course in Feng Shui.
