A New Season

Rosh Hashanah and cross cultures

The rituals and holidays I celebrate cross cultures and religions, and on this day I celebrate Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year.

While some ancient cultures, such as the Celts, celebrated the start of a new year during the spring equinox because it was the time of planting, Semitic cultures in the Near East celebrated the new year in the fall, after the harvest was gathered. The name of Rosh Hashanah can be translated as “first” or “head of the year.”

According to tradition, the names of the “righteous” are written in the Book of Life at this time. For the rest of us, we have 10 days to repent before our fate is sealed on Yom Kippur.

A popular practice on this holiday is to eat apples dipped in honey, symbolizing the hope for a sweet year to come. Many are the traditions and cross cultures that connect us.
May I wish you all, whether you’re celebrating or not,
a healthy and sweet season and New Year – Shanah Tovah!
