February 1, 2022– January 21, 2023
The symbol of 2022 is a Water Tiger who’s natural element is Wood. We imagine him crossing a body of water in a wooden boat exploring new horizons. Although we are now entering our 3rd year of the pandemic, the Tiger symbols a time to start something new, such as a new business or new career. We can also interpret this to mean a year of travel (well at least armchair travel for some), a possible adventure, and definitely a year that calls out our courage!
The Tiger is also a symbol of strength and nobility…one who is loyal and focused…and a humanitarian. However Tigers can also be quick to react and sometimes that brings out their aggressive, impulsive and rebellious side. Yet, for most astrological signs the Tiger year is considered a positive one as Water Tigers are more intuitive and better judges of truth.
For those less familiar with Chinese astrology, ancient lore says, the Jade Emperor invited all of the animals in the world to join him for the New Year celebration, but only 12 animals bothered to turn up. As a great reward, he named a year after each one of them in the order that they arrived to celebrate. The Ox was the second to arrive (the Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride, then jumped off the Ox making him first). The Tiger was the 3rd animal to arrive. In Nine Star Ki numerology, 3 is the number of new beginnings. The Chinese Zodiac, is also made up of 5 Elements, comprising a 60 year cycle (12 animal sign and 5 Elements each). The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between January 21st and February. 20th. In 2022, the first day of this Lunar New Year is Tuesday February 1st, 2022, initiating the Year of the Water Tiger, which ends January 21st, 2023. Another piece of trivia is that the Yellow
King, who was the first king of China, was inaugurated in 2697 B.C making this the year 4719.

General Indicators for this Year
The following information is compiled from a large group of resources and there aremany (sometimes conflicting) interpretations on the year ahead. However sometimes differing interpretations can help us better understand the year.
- The Year of the Rat (2020) was about survival – fortunately rats are good at that. However they are also good a spreading disease which we certainly found out. The Year of the Ox (2021) was about finding grounding in a new reality. Fortunately the Ox had his nose to the ground and kept us plodding away. While 2022, the Year of the Tiger will be about making changes, taking risks and opening to adventure.
- The Tiger is an Wood element by nature, and as it is a Water year (which nurtures Wood) the year has the potential to be kinder to our planet. Additionally the element of Water is one of diplomacy and thus there may be hope for some of the opposing forces in the world to find a way to work together. (Read about the qualities of the 5 Elements – Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal here SacredCurrents.com/about-feng-shui/about-elements).
- Water finds its way around things and can be a powerful force for change. Last year, the Ox helped us plod through the pandemic. This year we will ride above it.
- President Biden is a Horse which will give him a better year – one he has not had in the past 2 years – even with his win in 2019.
- In other US politics, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was born in the Year of the Tiger. Tigers tend to be strong leaders but may have short tempers and this year will have challenges for Tigers. Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Kamala Harris are both Dragons and are compatible with Schumer but may not always be in harmony with Biden. Hmmm, let’s stand back and see how this plays out.

According to ancient tradition there are 3 types of luck:
- Heaven luck is your astrology, which cannot be changed. We cannot change the time, place or family we were born into.
- Earth Luck is where Feng Shui comes into play and can either strengthen your luck by attracting auspicious energies and protect, or prevent negative energy from
coming to us. - Manmade Luck is what we create through networking, education, good habits, self- improvement, meditation, etc.
