Fall 2022 Newsletter & the Earth Element

The autumnal equinox officially arrives at 9:04 p.m. EDT today, Thursday September 22, 2022. The word “equinox” comes from the Latin word aequus, which means “equal,” and nox, which means “night”. On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in length. Some feel it signifies the real and metaphoric struggle between the light and dark.

This is a time to reflect and consider how we may bring balance to our lives and all that we are grateful for. The autumn equinox once marked the start of the new year. In 3 days on September 25th, it is the start of the new Hebrew calendar and the celebration of Rosh Hashanah – the new year, also marking a time to reflect and renew.

In NYC the leaves are still green and the temperatures have been 80+ degree F, so rather than autumn it feels like ‘Indian summer’ (thank you to the Native American people for the beautiful name). On the feng shui bagua this time is considered a ‘mid-season’, associated with the Earth element. In the two previous newsletters I discussed the Fire and Wood elements.

Let’s start with a few Feng Shui facts about the Earth Element at this time of year:

Quality: Receptivity, passivity, sacrifice
Direction: Southwest
Season: Late Summer, Indian summer
Characteristics: Devotional, empty, maternal
Material things: Pottery, clay, sand, horizontal
Shape: Square
Colors: Pink, brown, beige, yellow, terracotta

The hallmark of EARTH element in balance is healthy relationships with others. Early autumn is a time of Yin or Soft Earth, and associated with the ‘Relationship’ gua on the feng shui map.

  • This includes your significant other, friends, business partnerships and in your community.
  • When Yin Earth is out out of balance one could ‘over give’ or be self sacrificing…or conversely, only think of one’s self and be selfish.

  • Earth rugs both in color and shape are good for enhancing the qualities of Earth and for anchoring chi.
  • Earth colors and horizontal shape helps to slow down fast moving chi in the hallway.
  • Earth ‘stone’ flooring can help to negate the effect of downward/draining chi in a bathroom, basement or elsewhere.

Practicing Restorative Feng Shui (c), I always look for personal chi adjustments to offer my clients. If you would like to learn about personal Earth element adjustment for yourself, please be in touch and we can discuss the possibilities for a virtual consultation.

Additionally, the Space Clearing Rituals I perform are the surest way to lift stagnant Earth chi and open a healthy flow of energy in an environment, as well as creating the best foundation for effective Feng Shui adjustments.

Please check out the Fall class offerings here and let me know of your interest. Classes will be customized as per those interested. (btw, we get into a lot of personal chi adjustments as they relate to the 5 elements in the next course/s.)
