At the beginning of the summer (wasn’t that 5 seconds ago! ;=) I wrote about my work at The Assemblage. That newsletter was the first in a series about unique commercial projects I’ve been involved with this year. Each of the businesses I’ve had the good fortune to work with have an inspired purpose, a design integrity and a visionary owner who is commitment to the worldwide community.
This month I am please to introduce Designing Commercial Spaces with Feng Shuilocated on the Lower East Side (LES) of NYC. Owner and designer Jonathan Meizler has a diverse background in filmmaking, art history, and fashion. He now pursues the overlooked and unexpected in men’s fashion accessories.
I’ve consulted with Jonathan on the feng shui of his previous atelier and have
weighed in on potential new locations before he landed at 57 Orchard Street. Jonathan had clear ideas for the needs and design of his new location. My job was to optimize the feng shui potential while respecting those perimeters.
The site is a long, narrow space with 3 floors. The retail store is on street level along with the neckwear atelier and Jonathan’s office. The jewelry workshop is on the lower level, and the 3rd floor is the office of Jonathan’s partner Rony Zeidan, who’s branding company RO New York works with luxury and fashion clients (and is also my client).
Many feng shui adjustments were incorporated into the design to slow the chi from moving quickly from one end of the site to the other (there are doors on both Orchard and Allen Streets, although only the Orchard St entrance is used). Yet we needed to keep a healthy chi flow moving throughout the 3 floors.
Orchid Street is filled with shops, galleries and restaurants old and new, so it was important to pay attention to the placement of signage. Jonathan’s red dot logo (think – art sold), was already perfect for attracting chi. Jonathan and I performed space clearing rituals to cleanse the 100+ year old property of its past incarnations (read about the LES ) and to anchor Jonathan’s intentions for the future.
title of work’s new flagship store invites clients to experience the process of creating one-of-a-kind accessories. Everything is produced on-site, minimizing their carbon footprint and providing work for local jewelers and craftsmen. The fabrics used in the neckwear are predominantly natural fibers and the jewelry is made from ‘recycled’ 18k gold and sterling silver. Next time you’re on the LES, make sure to stop into title of work. The designs are fantastic and you’ll enjoy chatting with Jonathan.
“It is a very special pleasure to work with Judith on many levels. Her knowledge and perspective of the Feng shui practice is inspiring. Not only does Judith bring a secular aspect to her work that makes common sense, her approach will give one an understanding of how one should work and exist within a space.” Jonathan Meizler
Enjoy the Labor Day Holiday – the unofficial end to summer ;=( Judith
