Feng Shui & the History of the USA
As we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, I thought it would be fun to discuss how Feng Shui intersects with American history, from the streets of Washington, D.C., to modern skyscrapers. We know Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese discipline dating back thousands of years, yet its intersection with the history of the United States spans two distinct narrative arcs: the mainstream Western cultural adaptation in the late 20th century, and the interesting ‘after the fact’ analysis of early American architecture and city planning.
The Mapping of Washington, D.C.
It was George Washington who picked the exact site of the White House. The layout of Washington, D.C., was designed largely by French architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant and overseen by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
Although the Founding Fathers and city planners were driven by European Neoclassical ideals rather than Eastern philosophy, they incorporated elements of classical geometry, Enlightenment ideals, and esoteric symbolism into the architecture of the United States. This was due to the fact that many prominent Founding Fathers—including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin—were active Freemasons . Masonic traditions trace their lineage back to the stonemasons who built medieval cathedrals . Because of this, they utilized the tools of architecture and geometry (such as the square and compass) as profound spiritual and moral metaphors, viewing geometry as a divine language that reveals the harmonious structure of the universe – all of which is aligned with Feng Shui principles.
Here’s a Feng Shui Perspective:

- The Siting of the Capital: Early Feng Shui tenets prioritize proximity to a curved, gentle body of water to retain positive chi. The choice to site the capital along the flowing Potomac River aligns beautifully with these classical principles.
- The National Mall has a “Poison Arrow”: Long, straight, uninterrupted paths are viewed as “poison arrows” or sha chi, because energy moves through them too quickly and aggressively. The National Mall is a massive straight line aimed directly at the U.S. Capitol. Ideally the Capitol Reflecting Pool acts to deflect and absorb that harsh energy before it reaches the building, however these days its effectiveness is questionable.
- The Washington Monument: The monument serves as a massive Mingtang or focal point, anchoring the open space and symbolizing the protection of a mountain behind the White House. The city’s famous traffic roundabouts mimic the natural, curving energy flows that traditional Feng Shui favors.
- White House and Oval Office: There is so much to say about the White House and Oval Office that I will have save that for another time.

Early Chinese Immigration & Chinatowns
The literal physical introduction of Feng Shui to American soil began in the mid-19th century. During the California Gold Rush (starting in 1849) and the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, thousands of Chinese immigrants (yes immigrants) arrived in the U.S.
As they established the nation’s earliest Chinatowns (such as in San Francisco and New York), they naturally integrated structural harmony into their tight-knit communities. Buildings were quietly oriented to maximize light, business entryways were adjusted to encourage prosperity, and altars were positioned to shield families from the hostile social and political environments they faced at the time.
Historical archeologists have noted that temporary railroad labor camps often utilized basic directional alignment for tents and communal areas, keeping back structures protected from prevailing winds while maximizing solar gain from the south.

The 1980s “New Age” Boom, the 1990s “Wellness Craze”, and Corporate America
For well over a century, Feng Shui remained tucked away within Asian-American communities. That changed in 1972 when President Richard Nixon made his historic visit to communist China. Nixon’s trip triggered an unprecedented wave of American fascination with Chinese culture. Alongside traditional acupuncture and martial arts, Western intellectuals and designers began translating and studying ancient Taoist texts, opening the door for Feng Shui to enter mainstream American vocabulary.
- The BTB Movement: Grandmaster Thomas Lin Yun introduced the Black Hat Sect Tibetan Buddhist (BTB) school of Feng Shui to the West. He simplified classical, highly mathematical compass calculations into a more accessible Western framework based on the “Bagua Map” aligned directly to a room’s entrance door.
- Corporate Integration: As the practice went mainstream alongside the American “New Age” movement, major U.S. businesses and real estate moguls began hiring Feng Shui consultants. Wall Street firms, tech companies in Silicon Valley, and real estate developers started altering building designs to appeal to global Asian investors and maximize workplace productivity. Notably, Donald Trump (yes, the president) openly hired Feng Shui masters in 1995 to redevelop the Trump International Hotel & Tower in New York City, famously stating, “It’s just another element that you have that gives you an advantage over the competition.” If you’ve taken my courses, you’ve learned exactly how he maximized those buildings with Feng Shui.
Happy Birthday America! You’ve come a long way and we still have so much to learn.
