Did you hear the one about the Feng Shui Consultant and the Orangutan?
I often get asked ‘How did you get into feng shui?’ As you can read on my bio, my background includes an ongoing interest in architecture and art, as well as careers in fashion merchandising, jewelry design and precious metals. it was my personal healing work drew me to eastern cultures, spiritual practices and ‘seeking’..
In the fall of 1995, I decided to take a cultural adventure with Joan Halifax a renowned Buddhist teacher. I met up with her small group in Bali to take a deep dive into traditional Hindu and Buddhist practices. While there I started feeling unwell. This was a 3 week trip and our second stop was in Borneo (Central Kalimantan, Indonesia) for an interspecies communication experience at the Tanjung Putting National Park and Wildlife Reserve, where rescued orangutans are cared for and reintroduced to a safe habitat.
Needless to say it was an adventure. A year after I returned home my mother came across an article in New York Times that reported the drug I was taking for malaria prevention could cause psychosis in sensitive people (that’s me!). No warning was given with the drug at the time!
Through my research of healing modalities during the year of my return, (remember this was 25 years ago), I noticed a 3 year professional training course in Feng Shui. Well, the rest is history as they say. When I graduated in 1999, I left my job and intrepidly started Sacred Currents. I’ll fill you in on all the other details over a class of wine one day ;=)
Here’s the part about the Feng Shui Consultant…

If interested, the book, ‘Reflections of Eden – My Years with the Orangutans in Borneo’, by Brute Galdikas is a fascinating account of her 20 years studying and protecting the orangutans in this remote part of the world staring in 1971. Brute complemented the search of Louis Leakey’s other two protégées: Jane Goodall who studied chimpanzees an Dian Fossey who lived and died among the mountain gorillas of Africa.
