The Meaning of Good Architecture

Once again, life has been full and my newsletter writing has waned. I hope few well chosen thoughts will make the read worthwhile.

Good Architecture in Chicago

The first weekend in June I had a long anticipated visit with my niece (and nephew-in-law, if there is such a distinction?) in Chicago. Among other things Chicago is known for its architecture – my great interest. Many of the world’s first skyscrapers were designed and built in Chicago, along with innovative systems of parks and boulevards. My niece Maddy and I took the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise, visited Millennium Park with its The Cloud Gate sculpture by Anish Kapoor; a 110-ton elliptical ‘bean’ (asit is called by locals) which reflectsChicago’s famous skyline. The park also has a spectacular concert shell by Frank Gehry.

The next day we went Frank Lloyd Wright’s early home and studio in Oak Park. Wrightbelieved in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was best exemplified by Falling Water in Pittsburgh. I (and feng shui principles) understand this school of thought well.

At Wright’s home there were so many design details that attracted me, especially his intentional use of a compact entryway which then opened up into a larger space. He orchestrated your experience and balanced the use of complementary opposites or yin/yang energy as he directed the chi.

Good Architecture in New York

I have lived next to the Guggenheim Museum for the past 3 decades and always felta kinship to Wright. In 1991, after his death Wright was recognized by the American Institute of Architecture as ‘the great American architect of all time”. However, Wright ascertained,“Early in life I had to choose between honest arrogance and hypocritical humility. I chose honest arrogance and have seen no occasion to change.” This self regard alienated many. There are presently a number exhibits celebrating Wright’s 150th birthday, including one at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

My June travels took to two other very different architectural experiences; a weekend in
AtlanticCity (yup!) and the next one on Shelter Island (yum!). I hope you too have been enjoying the start of summer.
