Indian Summer

Sacred Current banner logo

autumn treesIt is generally agreed that we have 4 seasons. Yet we’re all aware of this time between summer & fall which we call ‘Indian Summer’ (I hope this term is still respectful and appropriate?). In Germany where I’m visiting at the moment, they call this time of year Golden Autumn (maybe more appropriate).

In Chinese medicine and feng shui an element is attributed to each season – water for winter, wood for spring, fire for summer and metal for fall – and a 5th element earth is assigned to the ‘mid-seasons’ in between summer/fall…and winter/spring.

feng shui simplicityThis mid-season (‘in-between’ season) is considered ‘soft earth‘, as opposed the ‘hard’ earth’ between winter and spring. ‘Soft earth’ or yin earth is associate with the quality of receptively. When earth element is balanced within ourselves we are freely able to receive love and be open to whatever is offered us. By the same token, we can be generous with our time and abilities, without self-sacrificing.

The yin earth season is also associated with the marriage and partnership sector on the feng shui bagua or template. Trust and a balanced flow of energy (giving and receiving), is the hallmark of a good relationship – or balanced earth element.

Depending on the form of feng shui used, either the back righthand corner of a room or house, or the SW direction, is associated with ‘marriage & partnership’. Perhaps take a look at this area and determine if it is serving your relationships, and ‘clean it up’ if not.

You can easily support this area with ‘earth’ accessories such as brown pillows, or an orange vase, perhaps pink flowers, a romantic piece of art or a terra-cotta accent wall. This sector can also be enhanced with a photo of you and your loved one. If you’re focused on your office, a picture of you and a colleague or someone you aspire to have a relationship with is appropriate.
