We all get a feeling – good, bad or indifferent – when we enter an environment if we take the time to notice. Sensitive people are usually more attuned to this. Any feng shui consultant worth her salt will be able to understand or ‘read’ a space and what it says about the inhabitants, without ever speaking with them. Beyond the tools of the trade, charts and birth dates, this ability to tune into an environment is so important for understanding what’s most needed to support our health, success and relationships.

Of course all of us have our blind spots – I certainly do. That’s why we all go to professionals. Yet, there are many ways we can cultivate our knowledge and sensitivity to the environment we live in. One important way is practicing ‘being in the present’.

Here’s How to Open Up to What Your Environment is Saying:

• As you approach your door bring your awareness to your feet and how each foot touches the floor.
• Listen to the sounds on the street, in the lobby, or wherever you are.
• See the colors and objects that you pass without describing them in your mind.
• Is there a change of smell or even taste as you approach your door?
• Notice how your key feels in your hand. Pay attention to how the key slides into the lock and turns the barrel.
• As you take that first step across your threshold, try to remember to enter your home as if for the first time.

This all takes some practice. Remembering to tune into any one of the 5 senses will bring you into the present moment and allow you to come out of your ‘head space’ and recognize something you may have passed over a dozen times. In doing so you may be delighted anew or recognize something that needs to be changed.
