As the sun crossed the celestial equator last week, we are reminded that balance is the way to a fulfilling life.
I love this early season of spring! What’s not to love with warmer air and daffodils exploding through the surface of the earth. The element of ‘Wood’ associated with this season is often misunderstood in Feng Shui. Wood has the qualities of upward movement and vitality. In other words, it has verticality and life force.
Yet often we think of the Wood element as the flooring or dining room table – which is understandable as they are made of wood. However, wood that is no longer growing and often in a horizontal position, is considered to be an Earth element in Feng Shui (you can read about Earth element here.) Wood element occupies 2 guas or sectors on the Feng Shui template/bagua – New Beginning and Family, which is early spring, and Wealth and Fortunate Blessings representing late spring.
The chi of early spring or ‘New Wood’ is flexibility and vital energy.
In a person, if this energy is out of balance they may be very good at coming up with lots of new ideas or plans but lack the discipline to focus and see them through.
On the other end of the spectrum, if New Wood is out of balance it can mean someone is indecisive….like tall grass bending in the wind.
It is often important to both adjust the Feng Shui of the environment as well as those living or working there.

2024 is a Wood Dragon Year.
If you missed reading about your Chinese sign for the year, please check it out. The Wood Dragon when combined with the nourishing Wood element of spring, has the potential to bring evolution, improvement, and abundance.
This is the perfect time for rejuvenated beginnings (even if you have gotten a slow start on your new year’s intentions) and setting the foundation for your year of success. Actually, in my mind, spring is a much better time to start anything new than the dark days of January.
2024 marks the beginning of a new era – moving from Period 8 (2004-2023) to Period 9 (2024- 2043) in the Flying Star system of Feng Shui. When analyzing a property with the Flying Star system I consider the year a home or building was constructed and the exact compass direction (in degrees) of the main entrance. Along with the natal chart of the building, in this system ‘stars’ change position every year influencing the Feng Shui of the natal chart and the occupants. In the Year of the Dragon the annual energy comes to our homes and businesses from the South East. Known as the Tai Sui, it is best not to offend ‘him’ by doing renovations or sitting facing the South East. Of course when this cannot be avoided, we have the benefit of Feng Shui adjustments to help mitigate the situation.

One of the most important things to do in springtime…yes cleaning, but also ritual cleansing or purifying the atmosphere. I use a natural tree resin made by monks for cleansing smoke, bells, flower offerings and other methodologies in my clearing/blessing rituals. However, something we can all do to lift the environment from the heaviness of winter, is to make a spray with purified water infused with fresh orange peels or a bit of the juice of an orange. You do not need to add much of the orange essence to a spray bottle. The freshness of the orange is very ‘yang’ and clears the ‘yin’ or stagnant energy of the winter. At this time of year is very uplifting to do this periodically
Having a formal clearing/blessing ritual is wonderful at this time of year. It is very useful if you are moving into a new home or office, been doing renovations, having health, financial or relationship issues, or simply ready for a fresh start this season. Email me and we can set up a call so I can explain it all to you.
In my practice, I address my client’s needs and issues first and foremost. I then visually assess their environment using the Form School of Feng Shui and then make their Flying Star chart and suggest adjustments combining my knowledge of BTB (Tibetian Black Hat) Feng Shui and the 5 Elements. I keep in mind the function of every area, my client’s taste, decor, and budget. This requires balancing many factors which takes skill and often is inspired by intuition. I love this part of the creative process which I often liken to making all of the puzzle pieces fit together – making a complete and balanced picture.
During this inspiring time of year
may your new beginnings be blessed.
If you celebrating Easter, I wish you a joyful one.
And May Peace Prevail on Earth
