Fall Equinox & Full Moon this September
The Fall Equinox was on September 22nd and the Full Moon is this Saturday, September 26th. This Harvest Moon as it is called, marks the beginning of our movement toward the dark, more inward or yin half of the year. It’s a time to reflect and align with the season, as the Earth starts to contract.
This Midseason between summer and winter is also a time to celebrate what we will harvest from our year. Whether the year held all you have hoped for or not, consider what you can let go of and what could be celebrated with gratitude.
Simple rituals you can design yourself or one you can create with me are wonderful ways to honor this time. Perhaps the season can offer you the momentum to complete a project that has been dragging. This time of transition from the yang Fire of summer to the yin season of fall is a potent time to stock take of your life.

Feng Shui in Brooklyn
An article in the New York Sun states, “Residents of Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst neighborhood are calling for the city’s Parks Department to leave the concrete jungle alone. The largely Chinese-American district is throwing shade at City Hall over plans to dig sidewalk tree wells they say would block luck and good health from flowing into their homes, according to ancient feng shui principles.
The community stands opposed to the plantings, which in some cases would place trees directly outside people’s front doors, creating a type of blockage sometimes referred to among feng shui practitioners as a “heart-piercing” obstruction.”.
Philosophical Questions
Although I do respect the cultural beliefs associated with Feng Shui I generally do not align with many of them. Besides the fact that I am not Asian and do not want to appropriate another culture, many ‘rules’ to not work for my clients and/or do not apply in their circumstances. In the case of the trees in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, I would consider many factors:
- Do the trees need to be in alignment with the front doors of the houses or can the city stagger them so they aren’t directly in front of the doors?
- Do the trees benefit the homes by bringing ‘life’ chi to the street and protect the home from the noise and the negative influence of the traffic?
- Does not having a tree in front of your house, when they’re clearly placed along the rest of street, make your home feel barren and deprived of chi?
Additionally, there there are many things to divert the ‘sha chi’ or ‘heart-piercing chi’ from effecting the house:
- A bagua mirror on the house is very effective for ’stopping’ negative energy coming towards it.
- A concave mirror can disempowers the effect of the tree by inverting its image.
- Painting the front door red, empowering it with strength and making it very noticeable so that good energy has no problem finding it.
In working with clients, both corporate and residential, I always have many alternatives to offer. These include both physical design suggestions as well and transcendental ones, in order to correct or enhance a Feng Shui issue. This is the art and craft of an experienced Feng Shui expert. Every circumstances and client is unique and hence there can never be a rule that is hard and fast.
